Who This Checklist Is For
If you've ever loaded a design into your LaserPecker software, pressed start, and watched it burn something you absolutely did not want on your material—this is for you.
I handle laser engraving orders for a small customization shop. We've had our LaserPecker LP2 for about 18 months. In that time, I've personally messed up enough acrylic, leather, and wood to fill a small dumpster. Some of those mistakes were expensive. Some were just embarrassing.
This 4-step checklist is what I use now before every single job. It's not theory. It's the stuff I check because I've been burned by skipping it.
Step 1: Set Up Your Work Area Correctly in the Software
This sounds obvious. It's not. The LaserPecker software is actually pretty straightforward once you know where things are—but the default view can trick you.
What to do:
- Define your material dimensions in the software. Don't rely on the auto-detect. I once left the default setting and the machine tried to engrave a design meant for a 4x4 inch coaster onto a 20x30 cm piece of basswood. It looked like a stampede of tiny lasers. The scaling was completely off.
- Set the origin point. The LP2 defaults to the center of the work area. That's fine for some things. But if you're working with a pre-cut blank that has a specific edge (like a leather keychain blank), you need to set the origin to that corner. Otherwise, the design shifts. I learned this after ruining a batch of 15 leather coasters for a client—the design was perfectly centered on each one, but it overlapped the pre-stitched edge on all of them. $90 worth of blanks, trashed.
- Use the framing feature. The LP2 has a low-power framing mode that shows you the outline of your design. I use this every single time now. It takes 10 seconds and it catches 90% of positioning errors.
What most people don't realize is that the software preview is a perfect representation of what the laser will do. But your material placement might not match that preview at all, especially if you've moved the workpiece between setup and start. The framing feature is your reality check.
Step 2: Adjust Power and Speed—Don't Trust the Presets
The LaserPecker LP2 comes with some built-in material presets. They're a starting point. They are not a guarantee.
What to do:
- Run a material test grid. The software has a feature for this. It creates a grid of small squares with different power/speed combinations. It takes maybe 5 minutes. I run one for every new material, even if I think I know the settings. Put another way: my first batch of acrylic keychains looked great on the test square, but when I ran a full design, the letters were too thin and the laser burned through the back protective layer. The test grid would have caught that immediately.
- For the LP2 specifically (diode laser): darker materials (like slate or dark acrylic) engrave very differently from lighter materials (like maple or light-colored leather). The 455nm blue diode in the LP2 is absorbed differently. If you're switching from engraving a dark slate coaster to a light birch plywood, change your profile. I've forgotten to do this more times than I'd like to admit.
- Log your successful settings. I have a simple spreadsheet now. Material, thickness, color, power, speed, passes, date. It took a few days to build up, but it means I almost never have to guess twice. In Q3 2024, I started logging this after an order of 50 slate coasters came out looking like fogged-up windows because the contrast was so low. $250 of material and 4 hours of machine time wasted.
Step 3: Import and Check Your Templates Correctly
LaserPecker's software accepts SVG, PNG, JPG, DXF, and a few other formats. There's a built-in library of templates, but you'll probably want to use your own designs or ones you find online.
What to do:
- Clean up SVG files before importing. A lot of free SVG designs from online marketplaces have hidden layers, stray nodes, or grouped elements that the LaserPecker software doesn't interpret correctly. I once imported a detailed mandala design for an acrylic order. The preview looked fine. When it engraved, half the lines were missing. The issue was a clipping mask in the SVG that the software just ignored. I lost a $75 acrylic piece and had to recut it.
- Check the DPI setting on images. If you're importing a PNG or JPG, the software assumes a certain DPI for scale. If the image is low-res (72 DPI from a web download), your physical engraving might be tiny. I now open every image in a free online editor and check the DPI. For engraving, 300 DPI is the sweet spot. Lower than 200 DPI and you'll probably see pixelation.
- Use the 'Centerline' mode for text. The LP2 software has an option to engrave text as vector outlines (centerline) rather than as a filled image. This is crucial for small text. I once engraved a tiny serial number on a metal plate using the default 'fill' mode. It came out as a solid black blob. The numbers were completely illegible. Centerline mode would have cut clean, crisp lines.
From the outside, importing a design looks like a 30-second task. The reality is that the file itself—its format, its structure, its resolution—determines 80% of the final output quality. Spend 2 minutes checking the file, save yourself an hour of rework.
Step 4: Test on Scrap Before the Final Piece
This is the step I still occasionally skip, and it's always the step that bites me.
What to do:
- Always have a scrap piece of the exact same material. I keep a bin of offcuts for exactly this reason. If you don't have an offcut, sacrifice one piece from your order. It's cheaper than ruining the whole batch.
- Engrave a small but representative sample. Don't just test a corner of your design. Test the part that has the smallest text, the thinnest lines, or the most detailed graphics. If the design is a logo with a 0.5mm stroke and a 6pt font, test that exact stroke and that exact font.
- Check the depth and contrast. After the test, wipe the surface clean (some materials produce residue that hides the true depth) and look at it under good light. Does the contrast look right? Is the depth consistent? If it looks borderline, adjust the settings. Do not proceed. I have six slate coasters on my desk right now that I keep as a reminder. The test square looked okay, barely. I ran the full batch of 20. The final results were so faint the client asked if the laser had actually done anything at all. That was a $160 order, redone at my cost, with a 1-week delay.
The test also helps with positioning. I once checked the design on scrap, the engraving was perfect. But when I placed the final piece, I was off by 2mm because the workpiece shifted slightly when I closed the lid. The framing step would have caught that.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
These are the things I still have to consciously watch out for, even after dozens of orders:
- Ignoring the 'Focus' setting. The LP2 has automatic focus, which is great. But if you're using a rotary attachment for cylindrical objects, the focal point changes. I once engraved on a wine glass without adjusting the focus properly. The design was blurry and stretched. $50 wine glass, ruined. The error was that I assumed auto-focus worked with the rotary attachment. It does not. You need to set it manually.
- Forgetting to save your job file. The software can crash. It doesn't happen often, but it does. If you've spent 20 minutes tweaking a complex design, save the project file. I had a client's wedding invitation template that I'd carefully positioned on a piece of leather. The software froze. I lost the positioning entirely. I had to redo it from memory, and I got the rotation wrong on the first try. Waste of another piece.
- Thinking templates are plug-and-play. Even official LaserPecker templates might need size adjustments for your specific blank. A template labeled 'standard coaster' might be designed for a 3.9 inch coaster, but your coaster blanks might be 4 inches. The difference is small, but on a round coaster, a 0.1 inch margin error means the design is visibly off-center.
- Over-complicating the design. The LP2 is powerful for its size, but it's a diode laser, not a CO2 monster. Trying to engrave a photograph at high resolution on a small piece of wood can take 45 minutes and still look mediocre. I'd argue that simpler, high-contrast vector designs often look better and engrave in a fraction of the time. I now avoid bitmap engraving for anything smaller than 4x4 inches unless the client specifically requests it.
This checklist came from real screw-ups. It's not perfect for every situation—I can only speak to working with the LP2 on small-batch B2B orders. If you're doing large-format work or running a full production line, there are probably other factors I'm not aware of. But for anyone starting out with a LaserPecker, or anyone who's already lost a few pieces of material to avoidable mistakes, this should help you get to a consistent 'good' result a lot faster.
